The Bookstore That Stays Open Until Midnight
My favorite thing to do in this city costs nothing: park badly in North Beach, walk into a bookstore at 10:40 on a Tuesday night, and stay until they turn the lights off. It's three narrow floors, the stairs creak, and the poetry section is up a ladder in a room the size of a closet.
What to Do There
Go up first, not down. The top floor is where the staff picks live and the handwritten shelf-talkers are genuinely worth reading — someone up there has extremely strong opinions about translated fiction and they have never once steered me wrong.
The Ritual
I get an espresso two doors down, walk over, and give myself a rule: one book, whatever it is, no researching it first. Half of my favorite books of the last three years came out of that rule.
Practical Notes
Open late every night. Street parking is a fantasy after 7pm — use the garage on the corner, it's eight dollars and worth every cent for the mental health savings.
