The Overlook Nobody Parks At
Everyone goes to the same two turnouts in the Headlands and fights forty other people for the same photo. There's a third one about a mile further up the road, unmarked, with room for maybe four cars, and I have been up there at sunset a dozen times and shared it with more than two people exactly once.
Why It's Better
You're higher and further west, so you get the bridge in profile with the city behind it rather than head-on, and when the fog comes in you're often above it. That's the shot — the towers poking out of a white sea with everything else gone. I've seen it maybe one visit in four.
Getting There
Head up Conzelman past the popular pullouts and keep going after the road narrows to one way. It's on the right after the second bend, gravel, no sign. Do not attempt after dark in a low car; the shoulder is genuinely rough.
What to Bring
A real jacket, a thermos, and no expectations about the fog. Half the magic is that you can't schedule it.
