The Food We Finally Settled On

After four brands and one very expensive vet conversation

We went through four foods in eighteen months. Two gave him a dull coat, one gave him a stomach that made me question my life choices, and one he simply refused to eat. What finally worked was a fresh, gently-cooked subscription food — real chicken, real vegetables, portioned by weight and delivered frozen.

The difference showed up in about three weeks: shinier coat, smaller and firmer output (sorry, but that's the metric that matters), and noticeably more energy on afternoon walks. My vet's take was that the biggest win is usually just consistency and correct portioning, and fresh food makes both of those automatic.

The honest catch is price. It's roughly double what premium kibble costs, and it eats your freezer space. I split the difference — fresh food in the morning, a good kibble at night — and he's thrived on that for over a year.

The Final Verdict

"Fresh in the morning, kibble at night. Half the cost, most of the benefit."
